Brussels is home to a variety of community initiatives aimed at fostering social cohesion and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. These projects, ranging from energy sharing to cultural engagement, play a pivotal role in strengthening local bonds.
EMPOWER: Advancing Energy Sharing
The EMPOWER project is a European initiative designed to assist Brussels municipalities in supporting and participating in energy sharing and energy community projects. Launched in collaboration with the municipalities of Brussels, Schaerbeek, and Ixelles, along with organizations like Energie Commune and Brupower, EMPOWER seeks to position Brussels as a leader in sustainable energy transition. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions, bolster energy independence, and improve the quality of life for both public authorities and citizens. By August 2026, the consortium plans to compile a toolkit to facilitate the involvement of local authorities in energy sharing initiatives. Learn more about EMPOWER.
Querelle Housing Block Contract: Community-Driven Development
Since March 2023, the Querelle (Krakeel) quarter has been the focus of a collaborative effort involving residents, associations, city services, and the ‘Logement Bruxellois’ to develop an action plan aimed at improving neighborhood life. Residents have prioritized 14 projects, including the redevelopment of Querelle Square, greening initiatives, and the enhancement of community facilities. The most significant project involves the redevelopment of public spaces and community facilities, with construction set to begin in 2028. A participatory approach ensures that these developments align with residents’ needs. Over the next few years, social projects will also be launched to reinforce positive neighborhood dynamics, with a total investment of 5 million euros dedicated to these improvements.
